By Donna Beckwith
Very few treaties made between the United States and any indigenous tribal people have been honored. One of the few that has been honored, at least in part, was the Canandaigua Treaty which was signed in 1794. Every year, on November 11, the more than two centuries of lasting peace and friendship between the citizens of the United States and the People of the Iroquois Six Nations is commemorated. The observance takes place in front of the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua, New York at 2:00 p.m. It is preceded by a parade and followed by a potluck dinner and a social.
