Ethical Fashion

Modethic's workshop in Madrid

By Susana Bilbao

The Madrid company Modethic was set up by two friends, Cecilia Nam and Alejandra de Marcos, who met at university while studying design and advertising. After gaining experience in the conventional fashion industry they decided that ethics and aesthetics are not necessarily incompatible. The starting point was to redefine the production process through all phases from design to marketing before going on to create their own ethical fashion.

Ethical FashionAll garments bearing the Modethic label are designed, made, distributed and sold in accordance with strict ethical, organic, aesthetic, social and financial criteria. Suppliers wishing to work with them are required to observe employees' rights in terms of a decent salary, working hours and trade union membership. A fair price must be paid for materials sourced in developing countries and all raw materials must be natural and organic; no chemical-based fabrics or dyes are allowed. Leathers or furs must be obtained from animals that have not been mistreated and whose meat has been consumed. Modethic's designs seek to respect the human body and are suitable for all races, social classes and cultures. Garments are dual-labelled: Their label lists a breakdown of materials used, social criteria observed and portions of the price paid to all parties in the supply chain; the other label provides details of the designer, or co-operative that created the garment. Cecilia and Alejandra are currently working on their new autumn/winter catalogue. It entails regular meetings with everyone involved in the process to encourage democratic participation. Modethic's collection includes clothes made in Thailand, Cambodia and China, as well as items designed by Cecilia using fabrics also purchased in those countries, and the company is now seeking partners to build a network of ethical producers, artisans, designers, pattern makers, producers, distributors, sellers and consumers.
