Marion Ouphouet says she will never forget the moment she reclaimed hopefulness about connecting to white people. Harvey Jackins encouraged her to see that she was wonderful exactly the way she was and that he knew it, too. As he encouraged her, his kind and friendly face caused her to stop simply going through the motions that as a black person she had gone through all of her life.

Reevaluation Counseling Marion said, "My mind then had to go back past where I had given up on ever feeling I could have a good connection with a white person. It felt like I had to go past cobwebs in my mind to a place of hope, a place I had given up on with white people. I looked at him and cried. What a joy it was to reclaim a connection to a white person and to have hope for this with all white people. I was more alive than I had ever remembered being." Marion finds it a joy to make connections with white people and knows that fully living and loving includes connections with people of all races.

Babies smile and coo, wave their little hands, and snuggle into gentle arms or a shoulder, falling asleep trustingly. Race does not matter to an infant or young person. Somewhere along life's path, hurts and misinformation lead to separation and confusion between races, and people forget what they were born knowing.

United to End Racism is a program of Re-evaluation Counseling (RC) that has actively taken on the task of eliminating racism completely in this century. It consists of a group of people of all ages and backgrounds, in many different countries who understand that eliminating racism is necessary for humankind to progress. The main work of UER is to illuminate the damage done to individuals by racism and to undo this damage on an individual basis, using the resources and process of Re-evaluation Counseling. As people do this work, they become better able to interrupt racism in their daily lives, form deep relationships across racial lines, and support the work of other individuals and organizations in ending racism.

There is tremendous positive movement in this direction among many people of all races throughout the world who are using the ideas of RC in the work to eliminate racism. Hurts from racism can lead to giving up connecting to others, but the opportunity that RC presents reminds us that this does not have to be so.

RC provides a recallection of what is inherently true about all people--that we are all good, lovable, connected to all humans, deeply wanted, and that when we do not act on our inherent goodness, it means that some emotional hurt occurred that has not yet had a chance to heal. In the process of using RC, delighted, non-judgmental attention encourages telling the story of old hurts with all the tears and fears that were felt, in order to heal and reclaim our natural inherent qualities.
