Empowering the United Nations |

Existing initiatives and new proposals were put forward at the Padua Reclaim Our UN Conference, organised by Tavola della Pace, the Italian Peace Round Table. If implemented, the proposals would greatly improve the lives of billions of people and fulfil the mandates of the UN Charter and many international treaties. It would lead fairly rapidly to a world of peace, economic and social justice, human rights, and protection and restoration of the natural environment.
he proposals include such things as: a standing UN and civilian peace-keeping force, a Tobin Tax on currency exchange, forgiving Third World debt, taxing the use of natural resources, democratising our global institutions, establishing a Peoples' House at the UN and creating a Global Environmental Agency. With an international force of voluntary peacekeepers we could stop human rights abuses and atrocities before they start. The question is: how can we get the UN Member States to adopt such proposals? The UBUNTU World Forum of Civil Society Network is circulating an online petition, which you can sign at www.reformcampaign.net.
One World Now, UBUNTU, the Party of European Socialists and the Global Progressive Forum are also calling for the United Nations to hold a global conference on UN Reform. As part of the Campaign to Empower the UN, many other organisations are holding conferences on global democracy. The San Francisco Peoples' Assembly plans to present a detailed UN re-vitalisation programme and action plan for UN Reform during its 2005 UN 60th Charter Anniversary celebrations on June 26, 2005.
