Some folks are finding ways to come together and create communities where discussion and actions are based on hope, kindness and nonviolence. Below are some organizations that are igniting into action and empowering us with ways to impact our environment both locally and globally. HEAL VIOLENCE BY CREATING DEPARTMENT OF PEACE This call to action came from Marianne Williamson in June 2003 asking citizen's to lobby for a Department of Peace DoP (HR 1673). This proposed bill is sponsored in the House of Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. According the to DoP website "The bill establishes nonviolence as an organizing principle of American society, providing the U.S. President with an array of peace-building policy options for domestic and international use." Read the latest draft of the proposed legislation at: www.dopcampaign.org. 10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO CONTRIBUTE TO INTERNAL, INTERPERSONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL PEACE. The Center for Nonviolent Communications creates and connects with "life-serving" systems in economics, education, justice, health-care, and peace-keeping. Through compassionate communication we are strengthened in our ability to inspire compassion from others and to respond compassionately towards others and towards ourselves. The center has certified 120 trainers, 600 teachers and 1200 students and parents around the world applying the principle of "Each one, teach one". www.cnvc.org/tensteps.html RUN AGAINST BUSH Run Against Bush is a national organization active in all 50 states. The participants are expressing their political beliefs by walking, jogging and running while wearing distinctive "Run Against Bush" T-shirts. "Given the election results we will continue to run and fight for what we believe in," says a participant in Houston, Texas. www.runagainstbush.org MEDIA ORGANIZE New York City is preparing its 2nd NYC Grassroots Media Conference. The goal of the event scheduled for April is to create diverse media alternatives to corporate media as well as strengthening the relationship between independent media and community organizations. Members of community groups with or without media components are invited. www.nycgrassrootsmedia.org Human Rights Watch is a U.S. based non-profit organization working to influence government officials for change, as well as providing media coverage from around the world.
