Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, has received the 'Man for Peace' Award from Nobel Peace Prize Laureates at a ceremony in Rome. The former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev, praised the singer for his charity work and for standing by his convictions, despite personal hardships. The award cites his 'dedication to the promotion of peace, the reconciliation of peoples and his condemnation of terrorism'. Yusuf Islam founded Small Kindness, a charity to raise money for children and families suffering from poverty and war in the Balkans and the Middle East. It also donated finances to the fight against AIDS in South Africa and for victims of the September 11th attacks. Last October, Small Kindness was given the World Association of NGOs Humanitarian Award 2004. The Association's Secretary General, Taj Hamad, told Yusuf Islam: "Your helping the most vulnerable victims of war and conflict... is a deeply moving example to the world and has helped foster a culture of service and sharing." Yusuf Islam has been denied entrance to the United States. FURTHER INFORMATION: www.yusufislam.org www.smallkindness.org |
