Thanks to a group of activists we have more of earth’s beauty to celebrate. Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. Representing - without charge - hundreds of public interest clients, large and small, Earthjustice works through the courts to enforce and strengthen the laws safeguarding public lands, national forests, parks, and wilderness areas; reduce air and water pollution; prevent toxic contamination; and preserve endangered species and wildlife habitat. Founded in 1971 as Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Earthjustice has played a leading role in shaping environmental laws. From eight offices around the US, Earthjustice attorneys have won many landmark victories, such as expanding the Endangered Species Act to include habitat; marrying civil rights and environmental protection in Louisiana; saving old growth in Tongass National Forest and Admiralty Island; and establishing citizens rights to sue on environmental issues. Recent accomplishments include court-ordered cleanup of run-off from ranches and farms around Lake Okeechobee in Florida, protecting salmon on the west coast, wolves in Wyoming, and enforcing air pollution standards in Washington DC. Earthjustice's International Program addresses trade and the environment, human rights and the environment, and helps build environmental law in other countries. For example, with the firm’s involvement, Costa Rican courts recently issued an injunction against development in critical habitat for leatherback turtles. Thank you, Earthjustice!
