Tunisia's concept of basic human rights consists of ensuring that all citizens have access to food, clean water, health facilities, education and the opportunity to fully realize their full potential.
Sandwiched between Libya and Algeria, this nation stands out as a society where 80 percent of the population is now considered middle-class and where all citizens benefit from improvements in living standards. Many credit these profound enhancements to the presence of Habib Bourguiba, the charming and brilliant first president of the newly independent Tunisia. Bourguiba courageously confronted issues dismissed or evaded by many leaders elsewhere as insoluble or too controversial: from radical Arab nationalism to family planning and the rights of women. According to Georgie Ann Geyer, a journalist and a writer, it is the promotion of voluntary family planning and assurance of women's rights that led to the extraordinary progress the country has made. |
