YUCATAN, Mexico - Maya women and men can now control their income through self-initiated cooperatives which provide solidarity on the path to building a locally based economy.
Organizing through Chac Lol, the communities of Ticul, Muna, Opichen, Calcehtok, and Maxcanu, have sustained 5 tortilla factories which act in regulating consumer prices; Amaranth as a Nutrition and Economic Alternative, which seeks to extend the role of producers of seed and sweets into providers; an artisan cooperative; and an eco-tourism complex which is enriched by phenomenal archeological sites nearby.
