Musicians at CUSLAR reunion.

A committee that makes things happen.
by Dana Brown

ITHACA, NY - The Committee on US/Latin American Relations (CUSLAR) celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, making it one of the oldest continually operating Latin American solidarity organizations in the country.

In July CUSLAR hosted a reunion in which current and former volunteers and staff shared stories about some of the organization's greatest successes over the past decades: organizing the US's first ever brigade to Nicaragua, sponsoring Chilean refugees, accomplishing the heroic feat of freeing an Argentine political prisoner and reuniting her with her family, and much more. Participants reminisced about the delegations they have taken to Cuba, Central America, Colombia, and Chiapas and the aid delivered - from bikes to blue jeans to computers.

Many at the reunion marveled at how CUSLAR had become the little organization that could. With just a one-person staff and a miniscule budget, CUSLAR has been a force for progressive news and analysis, education and action on US intervention in the Americas for 40 years-and keeps going strong! It has become a resource center utilized by the entire Upstate NY community and a catalyst for the creation of innumerable projects from language schools to farm worker advocacy groups to trade justice coalitions. Over the years CUSLAR has hosted speakers from Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Mench to poet and liberation theologist Ernesto Cardenal. It continues to bring Latin American activists and scholars from hundreds of different movements and organizations to Upstate NY to share their experiences.

CUSLAR is current work highlights the promotion of alternative forms of aid to the peoples of the Americas through innovative partnerships as in our Bikes for Chiapas project and our Sister Community Project with CajibIo, Colombia. Through education and activism CUSLAR hopes to continue to promote just and sustainable policy for the Americas and to provide long-lasting and productive ties between the peoples of Upstate NY and the peoples of Latin America.

Become a part of the legacy! Contact CUSLAR to find out more about current projects, Spanish and Portuguese classes, speaker or film series, or the library/resource center.
