Anke Wessels and Bayeh Boes of CRESP
The Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy, or CRESP, located in Ithaca, NY, is a collective of a number of diverse projects which have their roots in creating some form of societal change. The center provides a number of services for its projects, namely a non-profit 501(c)3 status and the associated accounting necessary to process funds. Started in 1971 off the inspirations of activists Jack Lewis, Fr. Daniel Berrigan and the Rev. Bill Gibson, the organization has since helped many local and regional non-profit groups become sucessful and stable.
CRESP is a loose affliliate of Cornell University but has no direct ties to funding and as such does not work under the supervision of the institution. Rather, the organization acts as an autonomous umbrella for projects such as Ecovillage at Ithaca, the Tompkins County Living Wage Coalition, and Theocracy Watch. Currently CRESP houses about 20 projects which contribute to the well being of both the college and the city. In addition to supporting other projects, CRESP core works within the foundation to bring speakers and workshops to the community. Anke Wessels, who has been CRESP's director for the last eight years, notes that the main function of CRESP is to, "help people who have exciting and innovative ideas but don't have the infastructure to get them going." Wessels hopes to continue CRESP's successful run in promoting a just, peaceful, and sustainable society by strengthening the ties between projects and creating a new model for social activism based on, "taking a passionate stand for an issue without alienating others." This future vision would serve to both strengthen the organization as a whole, and to promote community cooperation on difficult and controversial issues.
