Story from Positive News UK.
What a birthday party! 130 people from 22 countries on every continent came together to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Global Ecovillage Network, GEN. They left full of inspiration and energy for the decade to come. Ecovillages are urban or rural communities made up of people striving to live a low-impact way of life by using ecological design, permaculture, green building techniques and production, renewable energy, community building practices, and much more. Jonathan Dawson, Director of the Ecovillage Network, Europe, said: “A network that began life just a decade ago, has today developed into a rich and diverse worldwide movement. As the age of cheap oil draws to a close, we step into an uncertain future more confidant than ever of the pioneering nature of the work we are about.” During the conference, Gaia Education launched an international ecovillage curriculum, Ecovillage Design Education, which is endorsed by two United Nations Educational organisations. The newly launched Gaia University is planning to offer academic qualifications, and links are growing between US universities and ecovillages around the world as students search for a more holistic education. Ridley Scott, Director of Terminator, has recently completed a film about pioneers of sustainability, featuring Ecovillagers which will soon be shown on satellite television. “Bringing together in one place the people involved with all the achievements and breakthroughs over the last decade, has made us all aware of the strength and diversity of the movement," said Jonathan Dawson. “Too many of us, even those active in the movement for some years, the sheer scale of these achievements has come as something of a surprise.” From a full report of the 10th Anniversary conference in Network News, magazine of the Findhorn Foundation Community.
