Permaculture: Design for a Positive Future |

A small scale grassroots movement is allowing millions of people all over the world to learn about healthier ways of living. Food, energy, and clean environments for work and play are becoming a topic of widespread interest.
Permaculture is one of the few disciplines that offers a holistic attempt at building a society of solutions. The two major factors that make permaculture unique within the environmental movement are its focus on solution-oriented action and its emphasis on personal and local transformation. There is no need to wait for a greener president or for the next generation; we can begin changing today! Permaculture is often mistaken as a set of recipes for gardening and green living, but in actuality it is a set of ethics and principles that points us to the way of designing human settlements in accordance with the patterns of nature.
The main method of permaculture comes in understanding design. So many of the problems in our culture are the result of little, or poor, design. If we can all learn to be designers of productive and positive systems, we are on the road to sustainability! In permaculture we examine a number of theories about design but take our main inspirations from natural systems, which are complete models of sustainable systems. By taking lessons from nature and applying them on a small scale to our homes and communities we can quickly change course for a more positive impact on the world.
