Story from Positive News Hong Kong
The World's only Minister for Renewable Energy, Vilas Muttemwar, Honourable Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Sources in India, has received 2005's World Wind Energy Award for all his outstanding achievements in pursuing policies to encourage the use of wind energy. Under his leadership, India has become number four, worldwide, in terms of installed wind capacity, with currently more than 4,000 mega watts of turbines in operation. The award was presented at the fourth World Wind Energy Conference in Melbourne, Australia where State Premier, Steve Bracks, said the State of Victoria is setting out targets for renewable energy which go beyond those of Australia’s Federal Government. Meanwhile, China could become the world leader in wind power according to Greenpeace. By 2020, Guandong province could meet the equivalent of Hong Kong’s total current electricity supply. A string of five 'eco-cities', designed by British engineers, will be built in China. These self-sustaining urban centres, which are the size of a large western capital are regarded as a prototype for urban living in overpopulated and polluted environments.
