A number of notable changes are sweeping across Latin America for the better. Argentina recently repaid its IMF loan, and numerous countries have elected officials pushing strong social agendas and promising to resist economic pressure from the Western world. Many protests and events, from riots against corporate privatization of water to the recent World Social Forum held in Venezuela have sparked a creative and revolutionary wave of change. CARACAS, Venezuela - The World Social Forum, which for the last 4 years has been held in Porto Alegre,Brazil, was held this year in Venezuela, Mali, and Pakistan. In 2007 it will be held in Nairobi, Kenya. The mantra of the Forum is “Another World is Possible,” and it is a powerful conference, a Woodstock with a global purpose, a leftist hive, an intellectual hub,a rekindling of the activist flame, and much more. President Hugo Chavez spoke. There were on any given day dozens of discussions to choose from and attend with panels of speakers from several different countries, and time for debate. Topics of these discussions ranged from human rights to water concerns to the Bolivarian Revolution, as Hugo Chavez calls the leftist political movement growing in his country and throughout South America. Most participants traveled from countries within South America with many indigenous groups represented. One group of Colombians biked for 11 days over the mountains to come to Caracas. Also present were Cindy Sheehan and Iraqi War Veterans for Peace, Code Pink, Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, Global Justice, and many more from North America. Housing for most participants consisted of campgrounds, where everyone learned even more about how to live together safely, sanitarily, peacefully & joyfully in a global community.
