Story from Positive News UK
UK - Trafalgar Square is to be the venue for a festival of Venezuelan music and culture in September. This is the first of many cooperative ventures between London and Venezuela that were agreed during President Hugo Chavez's visit to the capital. Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said that it was not only for economic reasons that he was so delighted to welcome the President to the capital. "President Chavez is a beacon of democracy and social progress in Latin America,” he said. “Since 1998 he has won ten elections in eight years – an unprecedented record of electoral success in any country. He has won this much electoral popularity because, among other measures, he introduced the first effective health service into Venezuela and is paying for 250,000 people’s eye operations to cure their blindness – a record any politician would be proud of.” At a press conference after his meeting with the Mayor, the President was asked why he was referred to in the press as a tyrant and dictator. He replied: “Have I ever invaded a country? Have we bombarded cities? That you can compare me to the US president, this is shocking! He is an assassin who should be put in jail and condemned by the International Criminal Court.” President Chavez continued: “Our politics respect the sovereignty of the people and other countries and international law, which is not respected in Washington. We believe in respect for international law.” Mr. Livingstone said he would be in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, next year. He said: “This is the start of a better understanding and cooperation between our countries. London and Caracas will both be sharing best practice in renewable energies and sustainable technologies.” Contact: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk |
