Over forty exhibitors participated in the Ithaca community Earthday celebration at the Ithaca Farmers’ market on April 23. Activities included musicians, artists, a talk on children’s’ gardens, demonstrations of energy saving devices and exhibits of green products and house wares of all types and descriptions. The 12th annual Compost Fair was one of the activities at the event. Master composters demonstrated effective composting techniques and answered questions on proper composting practices. However, the center of attention at this year’s celebration was the fashion show featuring the participants in the Re-Fashion Design Contest. Competing in six categories, participants displayed designs created from one or more existing garments or materials that are unused, worn out or otherwise unwearable. Entries ranged from a skirt made from dad’s old neckties to an ensemble consisting of an old army uniform refashioned into a hip skirt, to a suit of old stuffed toys. The winner of the evening/party category also took best of show honors. Anastasia Zygarowicz, took home the top prize for her creation of a wedding dress comprised of old, unused, white dress shirts.
