by Lee Riddell
Every Wednesday at 4:30 Joan Wile gathers with her women friends in front of Rockefeller Center in New York City. A passerby could be excused for expecting that these ladies are meeting for tea, shopping and then a leisurely dinner, or taking in a nearby play, but life is full of surprises. Joan Wile, 74 years old, is Founder/Director of Grandmothers Against the War. She and her companions, some thirty-five grandmothers known as the ‘Granny Peace Brigade’, carry home made signs, and demand an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. These elders received international attention when they were arrested and jailed at the Times Square Recruiting Center last October for trying to enlist at the armed forces recruiting station. “What we want is for the war to end immediately.” insists Joan. “For all the troops to be brought home and reparations made to Iraq, to our soldiers and to the Iraqi people that we’ve hurt.” Acquitted of the crime of disorderly conduct, these anti-war activists will begin a peace trek on June 24 in New York City and arrive in Washington, D.C. on July 4th under a canopy of fireworks. New York City career women, aged 61 to 90, they will stop in Newark, NJ; Princeton to receive the Patriots for Peace Award; Trenton; Philadelphia; Wilmington; Baltimore Chevy Chase, MD; and then on to DC. With their eye on Congressmen and women, they will seek out and reprimand those willing to send their kids and grandkids to be wounded and to die in a war that should not be. “All of us have learned that it is not over, ever. It’s never over. There is always something you can focus on and use your energies toward. No reason to turn on your TV, sit in your rocker and take out a box of chocolates - cause there is so much to do.” Contact: Joan Wile Email: joanwile@grandmothersagainstthewar.org Tel: 917-441-0651 Web: www.grandmothersagainstthewar.org |
