Dances of Universal Peace are joyful, simple, and sacred circle dances practiced across the US and beyond. Open to all, the Dances affirm the underlying unity of all spiritual traditions and a universal prayer for peace. Even people who "can’t sing" or "don't dance" testify to the inclusive spirit of the Dances, which are all taught. Invocations of "Kuan Yin," "Allah," "Mother Earth" or "Christ" are among over 500 dances celebrating the sacred heart of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Aramaic, Native American, Native Middle Eastern, Celtic, Native African, and Goddess traditions. The circle itself is transformative, suggests Diane Olden of Ithaca, NY, where Dances have been held for two decades. "Singing and moving together, we start to breathe together… An unfolding happens beyond our human personalities, beyond words—it is simple, palpable, profound." Started in the late 1960's, the Dances have roots in many mystical traditions and even the feminist dance movement. Circles happen regularly from Juneau, Alaska to Alpine, Texas and in many other countries, including Columbia, Norway, Austria, Japan, and Pakistan. They can be found in schools, prisons, drug rehab programs, retirement villages and holistic health centers, at weddings, interfaith worship celebrations and international gatherings. Dances are linked and supported by The International Network for the Dances of Universal Peace. Dancing in Russia, Diane Olden noticed that, "the simple, most ancient mantras melted language barriers and became a universal language -a language of the heart, a language of peace."
