Story from Positive News Hong Kong by Thubten Yangkyi

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama recently spoke in favour of vegetarianism and against the fur trade, and expressed his wish to see 'a one country-two systems' style of government in Tibet.  He spoke at an international gathering of 100,000 people at a Buddhist peace ceremony in south India.

Speaking specifically to Chinese nationals, he stressed that he was not advocating independence for Tibet. He said that the Tibetan Autonomous Region was experiencing unprecedented economic progress and development of infrastructure by being a part of China, and he would like to see a similar system developed there as the one implemented in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  "I am not asking for Tibet to be a separate country from China," said the Dalai Lama, with his trademark smile, "so please don’t call me a separatist!"

The Dalai Lama was speaking at the teaching of the Kalachakra in Amaravati in January 5-16, 2006. Described as the "Kalachakra for World Peace", the Buddhist ceremony can reduce tension and violence in the world, according to the Dalai Lama. He considers it so important for global society as a whole, that he has crossed the planet to give the elaborate initiation 30 times.

In line with the Buddhist principle of respect for all life, the Dalai Lama encouraged everyone present to follow a vegetarian diet, citing the inspiring example of a recent Hindu festival where millions of people pledged to stay vegetarian for an extended period of time.   He said that the benefits of not killing animals were immeasurable, and that he was proud of those Tibetans who campaigned for animal welfare and encouraged vegetarianism.

Speaking about the nature of happiness, the Dalai Lama said although we may have endless physical comforts and modern facilities, if we were not mentally at ease, we would not really enjoy them. He said people whose minds were at peace – regardless of what difficult conditions they were in – were relaxed and contented.
