There is currently a bill before both Houses of Congress (House Resolution 3760 and Senate 1756) to create a U.S. Department of Peace. If enacted, this bill will provide practical, nonviolent solutions to conflict both domestic and international. The campaign by the Peace Alliance to create a Department of Peace has citizens involved in every state within the U.S. Seventy-five U.S. representatives and two senators co-sponsor the legislation with major organizations such as Amnesty International and the Center for Nonviolent Communication endorsing the bill. “Violence is not inevitable. War is not inevitable.” says Congressman Kucinich, co-creator of the bill, “Nonviolence and peace are inevitable. We can make of this world a gift of peace which will confirm the presence of universal spirit in our lives. We can send into the future the gift which will protect our children from fear, from harm, from destruction.” Working towards creating a more peaceful world, the Department of Peace will work domestically to reduce violence, child abuse, and conflicts by building policies and distributing resources appropriately; internationally, the Department would advise the President and Congress on ways to create peace globally. “This is the moment of peace for the human race.” declares Marianne Williamson at the World Peace Forum in Vancouver, B.C. As board chair of the Peace Alliance, she challenges us. “Each of you must ask yourself this question: What is the one, the one thing I am to do?” Act Now! Citizens can locally help to pass their own city resolution, join state groups to assist in regional effort, lobby in Washington to develop the grassroots efforts within the U.S., and expand the international initiative from its present twelve countries.
