We are in the middle of a six month trip around Europe and have been staying with many Couchsurfers. We are not the average, young, sleep-anywhere-person, but a middle aged couple. We have made some great friends, learned loads about other cultures, seen things we would not have on a normal holiday and been blown away by people's friendliness and generosity. In a time where the world is supposedly full of hate, fear and mistrust, we are having the best experience of our lives with the best people in the world! ~Ruth Woods (Australia)
CouchSurfing is a nonprofit organization with a mission: creating an international network of people and places and educational exchanges, raising collective consciousness, spreading tolerance and facilitating cultural understanding. Each member strives to make the world a better place, and believes that surfing the couches of the world is a means to accomplish this goal. CouchSurfing, American slang for sleeping on various couches while traveling or temporarily without a home, is not about the furniture, and not just about finding free accommodations. It's about making connections worldwide, and making the world a better place by opening homes, hearts, and lives.
CouchSurfing is safe, since every member is verified: they are who they say they are. Members vouch for each other, creating a circle of trust. To join the community, go to the website, create a profile. To use it, decide where to travel, log on, search for members who live nearby, contact them, then wait for offers.
Right now there are members in 220 countries with more than 136,000 couches available in Europe, almost 10,000 in North America. There are 11,000 in Asia, almost 10,000 in South America and almost 5,000 in Africa. CouchSurfers can even stay in Antarctica.
