Katrina Survivors Join Upstate NY Peace and Healing Gathering
Written by: Chrisophia Somerfeldt Over 30 people from a still-devastated, lower-income area of New Orleans rode 26 hours to attend the PeaceWeaver Community's annual Peace Gathering in Bath, NY this August, which focused on personal, social and ecological healing. The PeaceWeavers, Ithaca-based group Love Knows No Bounds and St. John #5 Faith Church in New Orleans raised well over $10,000 to bring members of St. John's to share stories, build community and enjoy much-needed physical, emotional and spiritual rejuvenation. Approximately 175 people of all ages joined in the multicultural 'Save the Planet' Gathering, where Spirit was present from early morning yoga to late night Bible study, during Lakota sweat lodge and Buddhist teachings, in songs sung in Yiddish and Shoshone. "It doesn't matter where we live or what we do... we are truly a Planetary Family," said Greg Lynn Weaver of the PeaceWeavers. "Gathering together is important for our healing and the healing of humanity on our Mother Earth." Some from New Orleans were concerned that biased TV coverage during Katrina would affect their welcome, but instead, they were greeted with cheers and tears in a heartfelt "family reunion" of new friends. Kids from near and far came together to swim, hike, do yoga, make jewelry and show their hula-hooping prowess. In Daily Talking Stick Circles, participants shared stories of Katrina survival, 9/11 experiences, day-to-day struggles, gratitudes and prayers. Like the talking stick itself, the week had its rough spots around racism, conflict and cultural differences yet the time, connection and commitment present made them opportunities for growth and healing. New Orleans resident Gussie Celestine, who has waited for 'Road Home' government assistance for over two years, said, "Here, I am surrounded by nothing but Peace, and I am given nothing but Love. You have brought me Home." For others, the faith, courage and presence of their New Orleans 'family' brought them 'home' as well.
