You can't stop the power of the people because the power of the people won't stop! On November 2, 6000 Students from all corners of the United States car pooled, traveled in veggie-oil automobiles, bused, rode bikes, and walked to the campus of the University of Maryland for the first ever national youth climate summit. Many dedicated students worked hard for over a year to dream and scheme Powershift, a national convergence on climate change aimed at empowering students across the country to create change. The conference was the first of its size about the issue of global warming in the history of the United States! Students educated themselves about issues surrounding global warming with diverse workshops in subjects like getting bio- diesel on campuses, eating sustainably, being a conscious consumer, and how to cook vegan baked goods. Speakers Ralph Nader and Nancy Pelosi empowered students to stand up for what they believe in and that people are stronger when they act together. Ralph Nader expressed that this could be, " the next wave of student activism," which made the students rise with enthusiasm. On Monday, November 5, students gathered in the National Capital to rally and lobby for the issue of climate change. Among the sea of green hard hats, worn to express the need for green jobs in the US, voices passionately shouted "Green Jobs! Not Jails! Parks Not Prisons!", "We are not gonna stop ‘til somebody listens!", and "Cutting Carbon is really nifty! Eighty percent by 2050!" The four-day conference was packed with action, inspiration, and direction for creating a path for young people to lead change. As a result many college groups have started new green projects or raised the goals of their current ones. Many students traded contacts and plan to keep in touch through an activism network. There is much hope that conferences of this sort will start to pop up among campuses across the nation! Contact: www.climatechangechallenge.org www.powershift07.org |
