Green Transportation is a Weighted Choice |

The way we choose to get around-and US citizens travel more miles per capita that anyone on Earth-impacts the ecosystem, our own health, and the politics of our nation. Therefore it is important to think carefully about how we choose to travel. One transatlantic round-trip flight, for example, contributes to global warming at twice the rate of driving a medium-sized car 7,500 miles a year, reports Ode Magazine. According to a report by University of Michigan Dept. of Industrial and Operations Engineering, atmospheric and oceanic temperatures have increased at rates faster than can be explained by changes in the concentration of greenhouse gases. This suggests that part of the reason for this rapid change may be the increasing volume of jet airline traffic round the clock and around the globe, which contributes higher concentrations of greenhouse gases to the upper layers of the atmosphere. This indicates that increasing airplane traffic worldwide has a serious environmental consequence. The alternatives: TAKE THE TRAIN - Research indicates that trains produce a third of the CO2 emissions of aircraft as well as offer a "more intimate" form of travel by viewing the changing landscape. GO BY BUS - Bus travel can be as energy efficient as traveling by train. Airport security gate hassles have spawned a new generation of comfortable, nonstop, intercity bus services such as Megabus and Lux Bus America. STAY AT HOME - Find out if you too can find eternity in a grain of sand and the wonders of the world in your own neighborhood. Challenge our consumerism oriented society telling us there is always something better somewhere else. ON YOUR BIKE - Bicycle trips in London have grown by 50 per cent since 2000, and the National Cycle Network now accounts for 232 million journeys a year. The bike is hardly an alternative to air travel but in terms of a zero-emissions journey it is untouchable. -by Ilonka |
