‘A novel protest to reclaimour beautiful skies'
HONG KONG - The Lights Out HK campaign presented a simple, imaginative way for people to express their concern about air pollution - by turning off their lights for three minutes at 8pm on August 8, 2006. As a rallying cry, it attracted widespread attention and raised the pollution issue high on the public agenda. It also sent a signal - picked up by the world's media - that Hong Kong residents want to clean up their act. The campaign showed what a band of ordinary individuals could do with a savvy idea, passion and direct action. Green groups felt the campaign sounded a powerful wake up call to officials, corporations and the public on energy conservation and air pollution. "It was designed to show both a personal commitment towards solving our environmental problems and to prod city leaders to be more proactive in the clean air efforts," said organizer Alastair Robbins. "I realized there was no point in moaning about pollution," he added. "I had to get up and do something about it myself."
