Love Knows No Bounds |

"Your neighbor isn't just someone who lives next door," attested Pastor Bruce Davenport of the 7th ward of New Orleans, speaking during a recent whirlwind speaking tour of Ithaca, NY. "You've shown the real meaning of the word."
Hosted by Ithaca-based group Love Knows No Bounds, the candor, humor and passion of the pastor inspired widespread support for his rebuilding efforts, catalyzing genuine community-building in Ithaca as well.
Pastor Davenport's community has suffered before, during and since Katrina by policies and practices that put poor people last. He insists that "one kid lost is one too many." His St. John #5 Faith Church has long been providing an amazing array of life-sustaining services, including a computer lab where rival gang members work side by side.
During Katrina, Pastor Bruce and church members braved contaminated floodwater to help stranded survivors; they face tough challenges with equal determination today. Low-income residents continue to seek food, water, safety, and the right to return to the city, as government plans threaten to destroy low-income housing and disperse communities.
Pastor Bruce, 7th ward residents, and their allies are committed to a different vision, one where resources are shared, people can come home, and collaborative efforts create better communities for all. Pastor Bruce, who made front page news in Ithaca and felt treated "like an ambassador," said that word of the Ithaca-7th ward alliance seems to have already influenced the Red Cross and New Orleans city planners. Love Knows No Bounds efforts include fundraising, pen-pals, renewable energy and media projects, an April construction trip, and promoting a just and positive future for New Orleans.
