WHEREAS, with present technology, it is tempting to use resources and justify them with importance of our work

WHEREAS, Positive News-US is growing, and we want to do so intelligently

WHEREAS
, Positive News- US wants to demonstrate our commitment to making responsible choices

WHEREAS, we believe in taking action in order to sustain our air, water, forests, and food quality, eliminate wars on people and land for oil, timber, and other natural resources, and protect our environment while encouraging self reliance in people all over the world

WHEREAS, the most effective changes come from individual and collective action

WHEREAS, we at Positive News-US want to create a new model for ethical reporting, not only writing about sustainability, but acting on it ourselves


 
WE COMMIT TO developing a report encompassing our entire ecological footprint by the end of 2007

WE COMMIT TO eliminating domestic air travel; and using other modes in the following order; Train, Bus, Carshare, Car with higher milage/gallon

WE COMMIT TO restricting international air travel, unless a situation arises and board votes on it and "offsets" impact with a plan for environmental compensation

WE COMMIT TO printing the newspaper on 100% Post Consumer Recycled newsprint

WE COMMIT TO printing other documents on 100% Post Consumer Recycled Paper

WE COMMIT TO publishing book reviews only if the book is printed on paper with high recycled content

WE COMMIT TO including a mention in each issue on creative ideas of what to do with already read copy of Positive News; ie. use as a giftwrap

WE COMMIT TO reusing office materials as much as possible

WE COMMIT TO avoiding the use of plastic

WE COMMIT TO setting up distribution routes intelligently for pedestrian. bike and car use

WE COMMIT TO providing carts for bike and pedestrian use when distributing issues
 
WE COMMIT TO looking for opportunities to ensure Positive News finds a good home and avoiding careless distribution resulting in the papers being easily discarded

WE COMMIT TO looking into compensating members of Positive News Team for riding the bus downtown

WE COMMIT TO encouraging Positive News Team to carpool, use reusable containers, ride bus or bike to meetings when representing Positive News

WE COMMIT TO supporting local businesses and engaging local craftspeople and artists whenever possible

WE COMMIT TO creating connections to organizations in Workers Rights Center to encourage low energy use and resource sharing

WE COMMIT TO using reusable containers: cups, plates, utensils, etc during Positive News events

WE COMMIT TO promoting vegetarian, local, and organic food at our events

WE COMMIT TO saving energy by using CFC light bulbs, unplugging unused devices, investing in renewable energy sources (solar, wind, soil and trees) and recycling paper, glass, and cans
 

This policy is not a burden, but a fun, easy, and direct way of making difference on our beautiful planet and taking on leadership in this area. This document will be reviewed annually and updated as needed.
