communities and nature together for the benefit of both, is transforming a 40-acre heritage site in the heart of Toronto. When complete, the new venture will be Canada’s first fully-fledged, large-scale environmental discovery centre called Evergreen Brick Works. The centre will demonstrate that nature can be experienced, not just in the wilderness or in a conservation belt on the residential fringe, but right in the heart of a bustling metropolis.
Energy out of the Blue
Oyster is the world’s largest operational hydroelectric
wave-energy converter. It harnesses the abundant natural energy found in nearshore waves and converts it into zero-emission electricity. The device consists of a mechanical hinged flap, connected to the seabed ten metres beneath the surface. As it moves back and forth with each passing wave, it extracts energy to drive huge hydraulic pistons.
