Positive News Celebrates Our 10 Years!
A collage of memories and gratitude from the Editor
Dear Readers,
THANK YOU!
For the past 10 years we have enjoyed our journey of reporting and effecting positive change in the world. So much has happened!
A little history...
It was the events of 9/11 that propelled the community in Ithaca, NY to encourage me to publish Positive News in the US. At the time I would distribute around town the UK edition of the paper, however, after the September events, I realized that the need for inspiring news was more significant then ever.
Without any publishing or business experience I did what I do well – rallied people to help me. On board came John Hamilton, my close friend and activist; Marty Luster, our well-loved retired NY Assembly member; and Paul Glover, a great visionary. I am so grateful for their trust and for their seeing my enthusiasm and my belief that the world is heading in a bright direction as worthy substitutes for the absence of practical skills.
Early on we decided the paper should be free, to reach as many people as possible. The first funding was a birthday gift from a friend, who as a joke placed a $100 bill in a jar full of pond water. Perhaps he felt that this venture should be well infused with life.
Those were our beginnings.
Along the way, many adventures, and lots of fun...
We took a cross-country train trip to the First World Peace Forum, helped with Positive News in India, and learned and laughed with our small army of student interns. Then, in the pioneering spirit, we set up Positive News in California, and eventually closed our Ithaca NY office. Before that happened, however, our printing operations halted for a bit, while the editor (that would be me), emphasized the
rights of nature by tree sitting. And when we weren’t sure from where the needed funding would appear, instead of fretting, we published “Our Non-Business Plan” which raised eyebrows and provided a breath of fresh air.
Over the years, many readers have shared with us how important the paper is to them. Throughout our journey, our core values – love and kindness - continued to guide us well. Teamed with the celebration of life is our human ability to create change towards a just and joyful global community. This is the source we dip from here at “Positive News: the positive media source.”
Now, here we are a decade later
Who knows what adventures we are yet to embark on. We know there are multitudes of empowering stories waiting to be made known through Positive News. Or perhaps not? Perhaps we have fulfilled our mission.
We leave it up to you to help us shape the future of Positive News. We need $40,000 in order to continue printing the newspaper and to cultivate our electronic edition this year. If you feel moved to contribute – Thank You. If you don’t, also Thank You - for reaching out for this copy of the newspaper, for being just the way you are. Below are some ideas of how to help Positive News thrive.
To conclude, my wholehearted thank you to this wondrous Planet for supporting us with life sustenance, to You our readers for making our work worthwhile and fun, and big thanks to each member of our PN Family - thank You for together dancing this dance of abundance!
