The dialogue between the government and FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) aims to end more than 50 years of armed conflict in Colombia, which has cost about 220,000 lives.

Because of the negotiations, about 5,000 cases of death or severe injury to combatants or civilians were avoided in the past year, according to a report from the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation. The improvement in the situation in Colombia followed several unilateral ceasefires by FARC, which went hand-in-hand with progress in the peace process. The result was a reduction of 40 percent in violence and 60 percent in forced displacements. “I believe that 2014 was the first taste of peace,” declared Leon Valencia, director of Peace and Reconciliation and co-author of the report.
